Introduction
It is by certainly the first and most important Maronite monastery. It player an important role in the history of Syria and the Maronites. The monastery governed over fifty monasteries from the sixth to the tenth century.
The monastery in Arab historians records
Al-Masshoudi said: There was dedicated to him (Maron) a great monastery located in the east of Hamah and Shizar. It was a splendid building. Around it there were three hundred cells inhabited by monks, and in it were great quantities of gold, silver and precious stones. The monastery and the cells around it were eventually destroyed by many raids of the Arabs and by the policy of the Sultan. It is situated in the neighborhood of the Orontes river of Emese (Homos) and Antioch.
Abu-al-Fida said: The monastery was created in 452 A.D by the Byzantine Emperor Marcianus.
